China Extends Zero-Tariff Treatment to Angola and Other Countries

China Extends Zero-Tariff Treatment to Angola and Other Countries

In a significant move towards fostering international trade relations, China has announced that it will extend zero-tariff treatment to 98% of tariff items from Angola and other countries. This decision is in line with China’s commitment to provide zero-tariff treatment to certain products from the least developed countries.

The announcement was made by the Tariff Commission of the State Council. According to the announcement, the range of products from the least developed countries that are eligible for zero-tariff treatment upon import into China will be expanded. This means that products originating from these countries, which account for 98% of tariff items, will be subject to a preferential tax rate of zero.

The applicable countries and implementation time will be announced separately by the Tariff Commission of the State Council, based on the progress of document exchanges with the relevant countries.

This decision follows President Xi Jinping’s keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the 8th Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. In his speech, President Xi announced further expansion of the range of products from the least developed countries that have diplomatic relations with China and are eligible for zero-tariff treatment upon import into China.

Previously, China had already extended zero-tariff treatment to 97% of tariff items from 42 countries including the Republic of Angola, and 95% of tariff items from the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

The expansion of the range of products eligible for zero-tariff treatment from the least developed countries will increase China’s imports from Africa, promote the construction of a high-level China-Africa community with a shared future, further share market opportunities with the least developed countries, and practice mutual benefit and win-win.
